In 1845 Indian meal (maize) was imported from the US and sold cheaply to the local population. Throughout 1846/47 relief committees set up work schemes providing paid work for the poor. In 1847 the relief works closed and were replaced by soup kitchens. By the end of 1847 the soup kitchens were replaced by outdoor relief schemes, where cooked food was distributed from workhouses to the poor.

Its purposed was distribute grain to food depots around the country and to sell it at cost price to local relief committees. By 1846 there were over 600 local relief committees in Ireland. Their job was to raise money and sell it to the pore because the local workhouses where full. Those, who needed food, had no money and had no way of earning money. The relief commission believed that they must find work for these people so they could buy food.
Facts Relief also came from charities and religious groups. Fund-raising events took place all over the world, and donations were received from Russia, India and Australia.
